I Can Hear You Smiling
1. I Can Hear You Smiling
Smiling changes not only the way we look, but also the way we
sound. Blind people can tell when someone is smiling, and in
experiments where people are listening to people on the phone,
the listeners can accurately tell when a person talking on the
phone begins to smile.
So when you leave a voice mail message, or talk on the phone
to a client, try noticing how your voice changes as you change
your facial expression.
This isn’t necessarily trivial stuff. Studies show that people
who smile more often tend to not only be viewed as friendlier,
but also more approachable, more attractive, more trustworthy,
and even more intelligent. If a smile helps the way we look,
then maybe it can also help the way we sound.

2. Mike’s Fun at Work Tip
Hold a smiling contest at your office. Create a wall with a photo
montage of everyone’s greatest smiles. And then award prizes for
the “most genuine smile”, the “goofiest smile,” or the “best fake
smile.”

“A smile is the curve that sets everything straight.”

4. It’s a Wacky, Wacky, World
Employees at Keihin Electric Express Railway in Japan must flash
their smiles daily to a “smile police” software program. The
program analyzes their smile on a scale of 0-100, and offers them
a printout with feedback on how to improve their smile, such as,
“You still look too serious” or “Lift up your mouth corners.”
It is hoped the program will inspire employees to smile all day.
