When patients recovering from surgery in a Florida hospital 
were allowed to choose their own comedies to watch, they 
required less painkillers than patients who were shown no 
movies OR patients that had NO choice over the comedies they 
watched. Of course, here at the old Hump Day we’ve talked 
often about how humor helps manage stress at work. The Florida
study, though, suggests that the more control we have over the 
type of humor we choose, and the better we match the type of 
humor to our own personal tastes, the more effective it just 
might be at managing the pain you feel during your next annual
general meeting or office reorganization.
