The Hump Day Humor-Gram, April 25, 2007 Issue Number 215 *Public Service Announcement: Be sure to watch "The Stressed Guy" video at www.humouratwork.com to find out what could happen to you if you stop having fun at work! ============================================================== 1. Survival of the Happiest? 2. Mike's Fun at Work Tip 3. Quote of The Week 4. It's a Wacky, Wacky World =============================================================== 1. Survival of the Happiest? A recent survey in Men's Journal magazine found that 55% of the workers surveyed would accept less pay in exchange for greater job satisfaction, including 6% who said they'd take as much as 20% less pay in return for great job happiness. A recent episode of Oprah (do you see the lengths I go to for research on your behalf?) featured a Wall Street banker who took a 90% pay cut to pursue her dream of becoming a trapeze artist. 90%!! And yet, she says she as never been happier. And surveys suggest that more and more people are moving laterally rather than UP the proverbial corporate ladder for the same reason - they place a greater premium on happiness and satisfaction than on money. Many workplaces need to wake up to the fact that it's not always about the money, even when people say it's about the money! ================================================================ 2. Mike's Fun at Work Tip Name your rooms something fun. Who wants to meet in a BOREDroom? Yahoo! named their conference rooms in their Santa Clara offices Coherent, Disposed, and Consistent so when someone asks where Bob is, they get to reply, "He's in coherent." You can also name your hallways, lunchroom or even your floors with fun, or at least more inspiring, names. Name them after employees as a rotating form of recognition, after your core values, or hold a contest to see who can come up with the most creative names that suit your particular workplace. ================================================================= 3. Quote of the Week "Instead of working for the survival of the fittest, we should be working for the survival of the wittiest, and then we can all die laughing." Lily Tomlin ================================================================= 4. It's a Wacky, Wacky, World It was only a matter of time before some couch potato got off the couch. . . in order to figure out how to stay longer on the couch. 22-year-old John Cornwell has invented a device that catapults a cold can of beer from the fridge to the couch. An engineering graduate, John built the device to remind him of his college days. (And just when you thought science wasn't wrestling with the big issues of the day). ================================================================== Copyright Michael Kerr, 2007. mike@mikekerr.com www.mikekerr.com
