The Hump Day Humor-Gram, March 21, 2007 Issue Number 210 Please surf over to www.humouratwork.com to participate in the latest poll: What STOPS you from having fun in your workplace? 1. Leading With Laughter 2. Mike’s Fun at Work Tip 3. Quote of the Week 4. It’s a Wacky, Wacky World =============================================================== 1. Leading with Laughter Here’s some more evidence to back up the notion that a healthy sense of humor is a skill and attitude that any effective leader should cultivate. In a survey of 290 workers, Wayne Decker found that those employees who rated their leader as having a good sense of humor also reported greater job satisfaction AND rated their leaders as having more positive leadership qualities than participants who ranked their leaders as low in sense of humor. Robert Priest and Jordan Swain found similar results in two surveys of military cadets: “good leaders” were rated as having a significantly more warm and benign style of humor, whereas poor leaders were rated as having a more cold, inept and mean-spirited sense of humor. (As author Bob Ross reminds us all, “A leader without a sense of humor is like a lawn mower at a cemetery: he has lots of people under him, but no one is paying him any attention.”) ================================================================ 2. Mike’s Fun at Work Tip Monday, March 26th is official "Make Up Your Own Holiday" day. Honest. I'm not making it up. So please plan something accordingly. Perhaps you could celebrate "Bring Your Duck to Work Day" or "Celebrate Your Inner Klingon" or "Wacky Hat Day" or "Dress Your Boss Day" or "Talk Like a Pirate Day" (although that's already an official day, celebrated every September 19th). Better still, come up with something that celebrates something positive, unique or remarkable about your particular workplace. ================================================================= 3. Quote of the Week "Life is too short and too hard and too serious NOT to be humorous about it!" Herb Kelleher, Chairman, Southwest Airlines ================================================================= 4. It's a Wacky, Wacky, World The finalists for the Bookseller/Diagram Prize for the oddest book title of the year were recently announced. Amongst the finalists: “Tattooed Mountain Women and Spoon Boxes of Daghestan,” “The Stray Shopping Carts of Eastern North America: A Guide to Field Identification,” and “How Green Were the Nazis?” ================================================================= Copyright Michael Kerr, 2007. mike@mikekerr.com www.mikekerr.com
