It’s a Wacky, Wacky World =============================================================== 1. Love is in the Air Ah yes, it’s Valentine’s Day, which means many men are in trouble today. But it’s also a good day to commit to having more fun at work, keeping in mind that we can’t always do what we love, but with a little creativity and a good sense of humor, maybe we can learn to love what we do, at least a little more. And speaking of the big “L”, here’s an inspiring love story: John Mackey, the CEO of the highly-touted business Whole Foods Markets, recently let his employees know that since he has made more than enough money to secure his family’s future, he is now only going to work for the joy of work itself and therefore reduce his salary to one dollar per year. Moreover, he is donating all his future stock option earnings to the company’s charities. And in the letter he sent to employees informing them of this decision, he signed off: “With much love, John Mackey.” Now I don’t want to get all mushy on you here, but more and more hard-nosed business folks are beginning to realize that maybe what successful workplaces need is a little more love, a lot less “sea gulling” (crapping all over each other). So happy Valentine’s Day folks. Figure out a way to love what you do and you’ll never have to work another day in your life. ================================================================ 2. Mike's Fun at Work Tip Bring in a masseuse (or better still a team of them!)to offer everyone a five-minute quickie shoulder massage as a fun way of saying thanks during a stressful time. Several workplaces have done this to rave reviews. You could also offer this perk to your customers once every few months. And if the budget won’t allow for a team of masseuses, then offer a monthly random prize for a gift certificate for one lucky working stiff (pun not only intended, but worked on for several hours) to go visit a registered massage therapist. (If massages aren’t your thing you could always bring in a balloon-animal guy, but trust me, massage therapists are way more popular.) ================================================================= 3. Deep Thought of the Week When you’re drowning in paperwork, just remember that everything can be filed under “miscellaneous.” ================================================================= 4. It's a Wacky, Wacky World An Ottawa bureaucrat set up a website asking for $1 million so that he could flee his boring job and do something more “worthwhile.” If only it were that easy . . . ================================================================= Copyright Michael Kerr, 2007 mailto:mike@mikekerr.com Reach Michael at 1-866-609-2640, http://www.MikeKerr.com.
