The Hump Day Humor-Gram, November 22, 2006 Issue Number 196 1. Remove Your Jobstacles! 2. Mike’s Fun at Work Tip 3. Quote of the Week 4. It’s a Wacky, Wacky World =============================================================== 1. Remove Your Jobstacles! There are thousands of ways to reward and recognize employees and customers that don’t cost a dime or take up too much time. A simple thank-you card, or heck, a simple “thanks!” is often all that is needed to let folks know they are truly appreciated. But here’s my BLT (Bottom Line Take)on motivation: Nothing is more fun and more motivating that success. And nothing is more motivating that simply doing your job to the best of your abilities in pursuit of that success. Conversely, nothing is more demotivating than NOT being able to do the job you want to do properly because of outdated policies, micromanaging micromanagers, a lack of proper resources or Form 742-A that you simply must fill out in triplicate every time you sneeze. (I call these “jobstacles” – things that get in the way of people doing their jobs effectively.) So here’s a question to ask everyone you work with every three months: “Name one jobstacle (oh, go ahead and say it, you know you want to) that is preventing you from doing your job to the best of your abilities?” ================================================================ 2. Mike's Fun at Work Tip If you want a fun icebreaker before your next meeting, have everyone bring in a baby photo of themselves, then get people to try and match the photo to the meeting participants. Afterwards, you can create a “Before & After Wall of Fame,” with employees’ baby photos next to their present day pics. ================================================================= 3. Quote of the Week "Laughter and good humour are the canaries in the mine of commerce-when the laughter dies, it's an early warning that life is ebbing from the enterprise." - Business author Paul Hawken ================================================================= 4. It's a Wacky, Wacky World Here’s my favorite newest word of the week: “Sniff-hanger.” A sniff-hanger describes the state of being about to sneeze. (This term won a U.S. National Public radio contest that went looking for the perfect word to describe just such an event.) Happy Hump Day everyone! And please remember, if you suppress laughter it really does go right to the hips. . . ================================================================= Copyright Michael Kerr, 2006 mailto:mike@mikekerr.com Reach Michael at 1-866-609-2640, http://www.MikeKerr.com.
