The Hump Day Humor-Gram, September 27, 2006 Issue Number 189 1. You Really Can’t Buy Happiness 2. Mike’s Fun at Work Tip 3. Quote of the Week 4. It’s a Wacky, Wacky World ========================================================== 1. You Really Can’t Buy Happiness I know, I know, it’s a tired cliché, and one we have a tough time truly believing, but it turns out more and more scientists are researching this old cliché. And time and time again, the answers point towards money having very little correlation to happiness—once our basic needs are met. In fact, even though many people make much more money overall than we did 30 or 40 years ago, levels of happiness have not risen by the same amount. People who win lotteries or get a huge increase in pay, report a temporary increase in happiness, but it’s never permanent – in fact, after about a year, lottery winners return to whatever level of happiness they previously enjoyed. The studies also show that many people who make an above average salary tend to be more tense, more stressed, and have less time to enjoy life and do things that create true happiness. This leads many researchers in this field to conclude that for true happiness, people should be focusing more on the non-salary aspects of their work, and instead place more emphasis on the quality of their work environment. ========================================================= 2. Mike's Fun at Work Tip Hold a “Limo Lottery.” Donations can go towards your favorite charity or your social fund. The winner gets driven to and from work in a deluxe limo. If you work by yourself, try it with your clients. If you work alone and out of your home, well, just stay in your pajamas, you’re lucky enough already. ========================================================= 3. Quote of the Week “I never failed once. It just happened to be a 20,001-step process!” Thomas Edison ========================================================== 4. It's a Wacky, Wacky World There’s so many excuses for getting time off work, and here’s yet another. Workers in a Russian province were recently given the afternoon off and told to go home . . .and multiply. Yes, concern over Russia’s declining birth rate has brought about some rather wacky incentives for producing more babies, including not only time off for good behavior, but gifts such as fridges and washing machines.
