The Hump Day Humor-Gram, July 5, 2006, Issue Number 183 1. Do You Do What You Do Best? 2. Mike's Fun at Work Tip 3. Quote of the Week 4. It's a Wacky, Wacky World ========================================================== 1. Do You Do What You Do Best? “Do you have the opportunity to do what you do best every day at work?” A Gallup Poll of 1.7 million workers in 101 companies found that only 23% of respondents answered that question with a “yes”! Yet, we know that when people are given the chance to make the best use of their talents they are happier, more satisfied, more productive and much more engaged in what they do. And according to research from the National Institute of Mental Health, when people are more engaged/absorbed in what they are doing at work, it is less mentally taxing on the brain. Doing something you like and are good at for ten hours feels like less work than working for five at something you aren’t truly suited for. This is a huge key to creating a truly inspiring workplace: unearth your talents, then redefine your goals to make sure you (or your employees) are making the best use of those talents as often as possible. ========================================================== 2. Mike's Fun at Work Tip A recurring theme at the old Hump Day Humor Gram is this: we get the behaviors and attitudes we reward and recognize. So if you want more fun, reward people for their efforts. At EDS in Buffalo, New York, leaders are awarded the “Manager of Mirth” award. The award is given to the leader that most inspires their employees, gives employees timely recognition, finds ways to make work fun, fosters creativity and teamwork, and who takes themselves lightly. ========================================================= 3. Quote of the Week "Without fun, marriages don't work; when jobs aren't fun, they become intolerable and dehumanizing; when children aren't fun to be with, they are heartbreaking; when churches aren't fun, religion becomes a drag; when life is not fun, it is just plain hard." Tony Campolo ========================================================== 4. It's a Wacky, Wacky World Here’s your new phrase of the week: “pocket call.” A pocket call happens when you accidentally speed dial someone while carrying your cell phone in your pocket, resulting in some very annoyed person listening to your car keys and muffled voice for the next 30 minutes. Happy Hump Day one and all. May the farce be with you! ======================================================= Copyright Michael Kerr, 2006 mailto:mike@mikekerr.com Reach Michael at 1-866-609-2640, http://www.MikeKerr.com.
