The Hump Day Humor-Gram, July 20, 2005, Issue Number 142 In this issue . . . Hump Day Alert!!! This is the last issue before the Hump Day home office takes its annual summer hiatus, something we do annually. In the summer. Because life's too short, and summers in Canada are even shorter. So here's wishing all of you north of the equator a fantastic summer. The Hump Day will return to its regularly scheduled programming sometime in late August or early September. 1. A License to Joke According to a study reported in the International Journal of Humor Research, one of the key ways a team creates a sense of culture and history is through its use of humor. Humor was a proven way to create a sense of cohesion, create traditions that connect members, and regulate the relationships within a team. The study also suggests that one of the ways members feel a true acceptance from within a team is when the team members are given a "license to joke." It's a phrase I hear from clients all the time: "It's great to be given license to have fun at work!" So here's my challenge to you: in what ways can you, directly or indirectly, overtly or subtly, seriously or not-so-seriously, give the people around you (including yourself) license to have more fun at work? ======================================================== 2. Mike's Fun at Work Tip If you can't get to the beach this summer, then do what several of my clients have done: bring the beach to you. A beach party complete with Hawaiian leis, tacky flowered shirts, fake palm trees, lawn chairs, and imported sand is the perfect way to celebrate the dog days of summer. For bonus points rent a karaoke machine, hold an indoor sand building contest or play hallway croquet or golf. ======================================================== 3. Quote of the Week "I knew it was time to retire when it took me an hour and a half to watch 60 Minutes." Anonymous ========================================================= 4. It's a Wacky, Wacky World Here is a helpful summertime tip from page 16 of a Hewlett and Packard employee safety handbook: Blink your eyelids periodically to lubricate your eyes. Happy Hump Day one and all! Keep laughing. And blinking. Again, all the best for a great summer season. ========================================================= Copyright Michael Kerr, 2005 mailto:mike@mikekerr.com Reach Michael at 1-866-609-2640 or surf him up at http://www.MikeKerr.com.
